Perl: Baseless Myths and Startling Realities

A while ago I wrote a blog entry called Perl is dead. Long Live Perl! It got quite a bit of attention in the Perl world and was even translated and cross published on in various languages on various sites. That article talked about the fact that not only is Perl not a dead language, but that it's not even dying. Recently Tim Bunce has created a presentation called "Perl: Baseless Myths and Startling Realities" and he's put it up on slide share so we can all take a look. If you're interested in the reality of Perl, I suggest giving it a look.

In addition, our new meeting night is the third Tuesday of every month. This new time didn't conflict with any of the regular's schedules and will allow some other's who want to be regulars to show up more regularly. =) Our next meeting is on April 15th at 6:45 and will be Chris Dolan talking about testing in Perl.

Wrap-up For Tonight's Meeting

We had a great meeting tonight. I believe there were eleven or twelve of us there tonight. Our newest member Abraham gave a 20 minute talk on BarCamp Madison 2. I then did Frank's talk on OO Perl, because Frank unfortunately came down with the Flu. We did some hilarious subclassing of GirlFriend objects into Wife objects. And we even managed to merge a boat and car to make an amphibious vehicle. We talked briefly about Moose vs Class::InsideOut, Devel::Graph, and Class::Exception. We also chatted about the upcoming Testing and Moose talks. And finally we closed out a little chat about the Komodo IDE. The people in attendance suggested the following as topic for future talks and mini talks: Komodo IDE vs Komodo Edit vs Vim Class::Exception Tools for coping with a new codebase (inherited or framework) And we've decided to make a couple changes to the meeting. Provided it's available, Andy is checking, we're going to meet in the Bach room of AltnBachs from now on rather than the library. We're switching the night to the third Tuesday of the month. This will help several people that were in attendance tonight, and several others that have said they wished they could come. In addition, the only user group that we are aware of that this will overlap with is the midrange computers user group (AS/400 RPG programmers). I'll update the meetings page and meetup.com as soon as Andy confirms that the room is available.

Fwd: [pm_groups] Introducing The Perl College

I haven't decided whether this is good or not, but here's the email I got from Uri explaining the Perl College. Do with it as you will. Begin forwarded message: From: Uri Guttman <uri@stemsystems.com> Date: February 29, 2008 3:29:44 PM CST To: pm_groups@pm.org Subject: [pm_groups] Introducing The Perl College hi all pm leaders, please forward to your local pm lists if you deem it appropriate. thanx, uri What is the Perl College? The Perl College is a creative merger of job training and job fairs. Here are its primary goals: * Provide free top quality training to qualified junior level Perl developers * Improve their Perl skills to the intermediate level * Match the new graduates with Perl jobs in the hiring companies * http://perlhunter.com/college.html The Perl College was created to address these issues in recruiting Perl coders: * A shortage of intermediate level Perl developers * A surplus of junior level Perl developers * Some are not developing Perl full time * Many are looking for a career developing Perl but can't get needed training and experience * Companies lacking the resources to train Perl developers We are currently seeking both sponsors and students for this unique education/recruitment opportunity. Hiring Sponsors: Thirty great applicants - cheap! Imagine how much it would cost in both time and money to find and train a qualified applicant for your Perl jobs. The Perl College dramatically improves the efficiency of this process by pre-screening and accepting only the most motivated students. Then we take it one step further. We take those already highly motivated students and train them up to a solid intermediate level of Perl skills. Efficiency, cost effectiveness and quality results - what could be better for your Perl recruitment needs? Student Candidates: Put yourself ahead of the competition. If selected you will have a week of free training from Damian Conway (valued at $3000). Plus you will exposed to employers who are actively seeking intermediate level Perl developers. Competition to get in will be fierce so put your best foot forward. Don't wait to apply as we will take only the thirty most qualified students. For more information on The Perl College, and how to apply to be a sponsor or a student go to these pages: http://perlhunter.com/college.html http://perlhunter.com/sponsors.html http://perlhunter.com/students.html Thanks, Uri Guttman, Dean of The Perl College -- Uri Guttman ------ uri@stemsystems.com -------- http://www.sysarch.com -- ----- Perl Architecture, Development, Training, Support, Code Review ------ ----------- Search or Offer Perl Jobs ----- http://jobs.perl.org --------- --------- Gourmet Hot Cocoa Mix ---- http://bestfriendscocoa.com --------- -- Request pm.org Technical Support via support@pm.org pm_groups mailing list pm_groups@pm.org http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/pm_groups JT Smith ph: 703-286-2525 x810 fx: 312-264-5382 Create like a god.
Testing talk?

It just occurred to me that this group has never done a talk on general software testing. Would anyone be interested in that topic? I'm thinking subtopics like Test::More, Test::Class, Test::WWWW::Mechanize, integration with Build.PL and Makefile.PL, cpantesters, code coverage via Devel::Cover, etc. I'm a huge fan of Test::Class and Devel::Cover myself.

work for the UW

I noticed that a few of you work for the UW. I'm thinking of applying for the UW job listed under the 'jobs' section, but I noticed it said a Bachelor's degree is required. I've applied at a few jobs before where they said a degree was required, but experience could get you in without one. Do any of you know how strict the UW is on that? I don't have my degree right now. I'm working towards it, but I'm still in school. Thanks for the help -Robert-

Hello to all.

Hey everyone. I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi. I'm currently a web application developer working for Vangent, INC. in arlington VA. I telecommute from WI. Recently I've decided to go back to school since being a veteran, the state pays for it. Perl is my first love of computer languages. I dabbled a bit before perl, but it wasn't until I picked up "Learning Perl" that I fell in love. My only problem now is finding things to use perl on. I don't use it at work, and don't always have something at home to use it on. Well that's a bit about me. I really look forward to meeting you guys at the next meeting in March. -Robert-

Back in the Library

At last month's meeting I mentioned that I was going to try to get us a meeting space at the Brink Lounge on East Washington. They actually have a meeting room there with a screen to project on. That way we could enjoy beverages and food while doing presentations. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a hold of them despite repeated attempts. Therefore, I've scheduled us in the Madison Public Library, our usual location, for the next six months. I'll keep scouting alternative locations, but so far it either costs us to use facilities (like at a hotel), or it's too loud or no projection surface (like at a bar). There's no happy medium. The best option would be to get a meeting space at a local business that doesn't mind if we order in pizza and beer. But so far no volunteers. If you have such a place please let me know.

Another dumb question to betray how inadequate my perl experience is. Is there a way to have a perl installation list the perl modules it has installed in a formatted fashion with information to facilitate migrating a bunch of scripts to another platform.

I got a new copy of Mastering Perl from O'Reilly. Anyone who either hasn't gotten a book to review, or who has posted their review to the Wiki tonight can take this book home with them to keep. Andy, I got the "Programming Erlang" book that you requested. However, since you're not going to be there tonight I'll hold on to it until next month's meeting. In addition, I have an XL and a M Perl Monger's shirts that nobody has claimed for a year. So I'll be bringing them to the meeting tonight. Anybody that wants them can have them.
Oh yeah, if anybody wants a free place to park (across the street from the library) just let me know what kind/color car you'll be driving. Henry and Dayton streets are all torn up on either side of the court house (big blue building) so that street parking is unavailable, I think. The ramp is open, but come up Mifflin.

Just a reminder that we have a meeting next Thursday. Jeffrey Horn will be talking about the use of Rose::DB for object relational mapping. Rose::DB is similar to Class::DBI, except is several orders of magnitude faster. Jeff has been working on a project using Rose::DB for the past few months and will be sharing his experiences using this module. We're going to try a bit of a new format this time, we'll be talking for about an hour or so, and then head over to a local pub for chatting, beer drinking, and food.

Perl one-liners and JAPHs

[The mailing list appears to be busted again, so I'm reposting this via the web form] At this month's meeting on Thursday, Doug presented a practical and interesting collection of tips & tricks to write short Perl programs. One of our (many) digressing conversations was on obfuscation, Perl golf and JAPHs. While I do not advocate writing terse code for public consumption (which hurts maintainability as well as Perl's reputation) it is fun and addictive. Here is an URL for a good introduction to JAPH programs: http://ucan.foad.org/~abigail/Perl/Talks/Japhs/ An introduction to Perl golf is available on Perl Monks: http://www.perlmonks.org/?displaytype=print;node_id=437032 The golf competition mailing list is summarized here: http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.golf/ An example of a nice golf with many learning moments is at this URL, with an explanation written by me: http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.golf/2002/07/msg1289.html and the specification of the problem: http://perlgolf.sourceforge.net/TPR/0/4b/ Chris

It will cover executing Perl from the command line, parsing files, filtering content, sys admin tricks, stuff or newbies, and a whole lot more. Hope to see you there.

Please reply to this post stating your first and second preference for: 2nd Monday of each month 2nd Tuesday of each month 2nd Wednesday of each month 2nd Thursday of each month I can make any of those work from both a personal scheduling point of view and the meeting space availability.

At one point Punkish said he'd give a 10 minute talk on the project he was working on for the lightening talks next month. Is that still true Punkish? Also, Graham has confirmed that he'll be doing a 15 minute talk on inside-out objects. I'm going to do a 15 minute talk on writing network daemons. Big Steve, would you be willing to give a 5-10 minute talk on the single sign on project you were just working on? Chris Dolan, would you be willing to do a 10-15 minute talk on Catalyst? Would someone else like to please step forward to present? You can talk for as little as 5 minutes. I promise that no one will judge you, it's about content not presentation flare.
MadMongers meeting this Weds!

I will be speaking at the Madison Perl Mongers meeting this Wednesday at 7pm at Madison Public Library, Central branch. This will be a very pragmatic talk: I'm presenting a half-dozen of my favorite, most useful CPAN modules. These are the libraries I wished somebody had taught me about when I was a Perl novice. I intend to leave some time for the audience to say some words about their favorites (or anti-favorites) too. Details: http://madmongers.org/calendar/5-cpan-modules I intend this presentation to be useful for people with a spectrum of Perl experience. I particularly welcome people who are proficient in languages other than Perl to offer perspective and recommend alternatives ... or heckle! :-) Chris P.S. If you are on any other Madison-area tech email lists, please share this announcement as appropriate.
