Hey everyone!
Have you ever seen a musician on stage who only touches an instrument
in front of a paying audience? Or what about a major league baseball
player swinging a bat only when there are at least 10k people on hand
to watch?
Of course not! They practice. The question becomes: as programmers,
how come we almost never practice?
Enter Code Retreats.
Code Retreats are a structured way to practice the art and craft of
programming. Organized for the first time in 2009, code retreats have
been practiced both privately and publicly all over the world.
Saturday, December 3rd, however, is the first Global Day of Code
Retreats, when almost 90 different cities across the world will host
their own code retreats in time-zone-staggered unison. The first will
start in Sydney and the last will wrap west around all the way to
Honolulu.
The reason you're receiving this email is that Madison will be
participating! Bendyworks will host up to 18 developers on Saturday,
December 3rd, starting at 8:30am. The event will feature pair
programming with a varied audience... yes, you might tinker in a
language foreign to you! (Think of yourself as a guitarist picking up
a set of drumsticks!) The event will be hosted by a facilitator who
will lead you through each of the (really fun) exercises. And lunch
will be catered*.
If you'd like to attend, please RSVP on Eventbrite.

Remember, due to space constraints, we can only host 18 people, so
sign up right away!
If you have any questions, please ask me! And check out the official
page for the canonical explanation of how Code Retreats work.

Thanks!
:brad
[*] We're looking for sponsors, so please contact me if your company
wants to be part of this awesome event!
PS: If you're a college football fan, don't worry: the Big Ten
Football Championship starts well after the Code Retreat is finished.

I attended this event at Bendyworks (this last Saturday) and it was a
lot of fun. After the intro, a programming group in Madrid, Spain
"passed the baton" to us in Madison. At lunch, we talked to Kansas
City. Australian cities had the first groups participating and Hawaii
had the last.

I did pair programming for the first time in my life. I also found out
that while I do a lot of testing while I'm programming, I've never
really done Test Driven Programming before. Although it was supposed
to be language agnostic, I ended up using ruby just because the
sponsors could help me with that and there really are a lot a
similarities between ruby and perl.

Thanks for sharing this, Mary. I had wanted to attend, but was unavailable that day. It sounds like it was pretty cool. Maybe next year?
