It looks like you/Madison and Austin were our two YAPC::NA 2012
submissions for this year. I'll be posting that to the Perl Foundation
news site soon. We'll be doing bid analysis and voting over the next
couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks,
Josh

Austin is a great city. Been there many times. My brother-in-law lives there. It's culture is very much like Madison. Lots of night life. Lots of entertainment. Very little industry. Very high tech. Plus, it's also a capitol city and a university town.
That said, the weather there is 100+ F all summer long. I won't be dissatisfied if Austin gets the bid, but I will be a bit disappointed.

Funny. I had exactly the same thought. Austin is a nice place.

Hey, I started this by planning to cheat for Madison - plus, what kind
of secret is it, if I put in an email? I still thing writing a clever
box stuffer (what was that one a while back? Guy had a very nice write
up of the Perl he used to make it work, taking advantage of some small
flaw in their one vote per IP a day scheme ... ended up stacking the
results so the first letter of the top N entries spelled out "All your
base ... " or something similar ...) is a worthy project. I just plan
to employ one for each ballot box.

Back in the late 90's Showtime had a poll on their site to vote for "movie of the week" or something like that. It relied on a cookie. I just wrote a little Perl program to fork 20 times and submit the form every second until I got what movie I wanted them to play. =) So yeah, I know a thing or two about ballot stuffing.
Anyway, the ballot in this case takes place via email between the board members I think. So that will be a bit more difficult. You'll have to find out who the individuals are that get a vote (medium difficulty), fake an email from them to Josh (easy, unless it's on a mailing list in which case they'll be notified of their fake email), and then intercept any real email they send to Josh (pretty difficult).
Methinks we should just take our chances with the real process. =) Afterall, Austin and Madison are both great cities.
Although, looking at the fact that the Austin web site hasn't been updated since 2008, and they have virtually no traffic on their mailing list, I'm starting to wonder how they can put together a conference at all. We have more messages in this single thread than they've had in the past several months total.

Yeah, well consider the topic - cheating! I do see, from the May APM list:
http://root.mendacity.com/mailing_list.html
....
We're getting the Perl Mongers band back together. Also, we are putting in
a bid to host the Next YAPC conference with the Houston Perl Mongers.
Appears Houston's a little more active.
