Hey everyone.

I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi.  I'm currently a web application developer working for Vangent, INC. in arlington VA.  I telecommute from WI.  Recently I've decided to go back to school since being a veteran, the state pays for it.

Perl is my first love of computer languages.  I dabbled a bit before perl, but it wasn't until I picked up "Learning Perl" that I fell in love.  My only problem now is finding things to use perl on.  I don't use it at work, and don't always have something at home to use it on.

Well that's a bit about me.  I really look forward to meeting you guys at the next meeting in March.

-Robert-

Hey Robert,

Nice to meet you.  What do you do your web development on (if not Perl ;-)?

There was an idea floated (okay, by me) to have a social meeting in Feb (middle to late) at AltnBach's, potentially the new home of our meetings.  They've got a screen and net access in a back room for free and we can eat and drink before, during and after the meetings.  Better beer and burgers than Nicks (okay, I am related). JT is out of town for the first part of Feb but if we can get 3+ who are interested (we could play that ... rock paper scissor ... no, mineral, wheat and knights game or something) for the same day, what the heck. I'll buy the first pitcher.

So 2/21? 2/19? Sadie Hawkins day?

Hello and welcome to Robert,

and Andy, if we're to do an informal February event, I would be up for 2/21, unfortunately 2/19 is one of my on-call nights for work.

Okay, we're up to two - one more and we have a social meeting quorum!   Don, speaking of 's-expressions', I found an O'Reilly beta book of:
http://book.realworldhaskell.org/

which is pretty nice. The public beta thing is slick - you read it on-line and there's a place for comments after every paragraph. Haskell's not lisp but ... and, as I know I'm in O'Reilly review debt on my Erlang book (sorry JT - I have read it ...) here's a couple other Functional Programming books links:

The Little Schemer:
http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=4825

books.google.com has a lengthy (<ahem>) excerpt.

Thanks Andy,  I just purchased a copy of Practical Common Lisp by Peter Siebel (learning Common Lisp is my winter project) and it's been really excellent so far.  It follows a pattern of a few chapters of theory and then a nice hands-on practical chapter.

free to read online as well.

I've put the social meeting on the calendar. I should be able to make it. I'll bring some MadMongers cards and we can play some Euchre or something while we tip back some brews.

Welcome. It's good to see a new face around here, and at the meetings.
I'm sorry to hear that you don't get to use Perl at work. Perhaps you
should sneak it in in a few places. =) See you at the meeting in March.
