Learning to Program: First Reads???

Well I haven't posted since May 20th when I introduced myself, so I decided to ask the community what some of the recommended first reads are for a new programmer wanting to start with Perl.  I have already picked up the famous lamma book, but wanted to find out some other recommended reads for new programmers.  Keep in mind that I have no programming experience outside of doing some batch type files.  Thanks!!

I started with the Camel Book (Programming Perl), often consider the Perl "Bible", back around 97/98 and it's served me well over the years.  It's probably my most well worn programming book.

My favorite is the Perl Black Book. Lots of great examples. I use it when I teach perl.

Thanks JT.  I will take a look at that book as well.

Well I am back afer a LOOOOOONG hiatus.  I am now working at the University as a Network Operation Engineer and will need to learn Perl for REAL this time.  LOL!!

I am currently starting over with the Llama book and plan on going from there.

DoIT employees are taking over MadMongers!  4 that I am aware of: Mark,
Jon, Dale and me.  Now if only Jon and Dale would start attending the
meetings...

Mark, feel free to stop by my office to borrow/preview any Perl books
that I have.  On the other hand, you can probably just take Jon's books
since he doesn't get to write much code anymore!

Likewise, the oreilly series books are useful & quite plentiful around
here.  "Learning Perl", though I think stinks.  The "Perl Cookbook" is
the way to go imho if you a plug-and-chug sort of learner and will get
you more than far enough along to be dangerous.

I've been telling Ryan he should join for quite a while.

Hint, hint, Ryan, go to http://madmongers.org/ ..

Then come to meetings and stuff.  It'll be easier to attend more than I do, but I enjoy every one I make it to, I just keep being busy.  Stupid busy.
