Tonight's meeting was AMAZING. Unfortunately, I had to leave early
tonight so I don't know if anyone went out for dinner/drinks
afterward, and what that discussion was, but the presentation was the
best one I've seen at MadMongers (at least in my opinion).
Chris talked on using FUSE, CAM::PDF, and PAR. He showed how each
worked, and came up with this really unique program that allows you to
mount a PDF as a filesystem and use it to store other files. Not that
this is entirely useful, but it could be a cool way to covertly send
files around. You could use any old PDF that you find on the web,
store your files in it, send the PDF to your super-secret-spy-friend
and s/he could open it and retrieve the files on the other end.
Anybody snooping in the middle would be none the wiser. More
interesting though was each of these modules, and how you could use
them for your own apps. I spurred dozens of ideas in my brain as he
was talking.
Next month's meeting is probably going to be at a new location
suggested by Andy. I'll let you know the address as soon as we have a
confirmed booked room. Unless someone has a topic they'd like to talk
about, I'm going to do a talk on whatever random cool perl thing I
decide to talk about. It might be sys admin stuff, it might be
something I'm working on with FUSE, it might be about turning a perl
project into a profitable perl product, who knows? Please let me know
if you have a suggestion. I'm pretty happy to talk on any topic. I've
been programming in Perl for 11 years now, so if there's anything you
want to know about Perl or some Perl module, I can probably figure it
out and build a presentation about it.
We need to decide if we want to do a February meeting. Our meeting
date falls on Valentines Day. There are three of us at least who don't
care and would definitely do that. Or we could do it on a different
day that month. Or we could skip it all together. Please give me some
feedback about your opinion on this matter.
